How to Choose the Right Ski Helmet with MIPS

A helmet only does its job when you wear it from the first lift to the final run. That is why choosing a ski helmet with MIPS is about more than picking a colour or matching your goggles. The right model should fit securely, suit the way you ski and feel comfortable enough that you never leave it in the car.

MIPS-equipped helmets are now common across piste, all-mountain and freeride ranges, with options for everyone from first-week skiers to riders chasing storm laps. The technology is worth understanding, but it should be one part of a wider buying decision that starts with fit.

What MIPS does in a ski helmet

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. In a MIPS helmet, a low-friction layer sits between the outer shell and the liner. During certain angled impacts, this layer is designed to allow a small amount of movement between the helmet and the head. The aim is to help manage rotational motion that can occur in a fall.

It is not a force field, and it does not make any helmet invincible. A ski helmet with MIPS must still fit correctly, meet the relevant safety standard and be in good condition. Think of MIPS as an additional design feature inside a complete protection system, rather than a reason to overlook the basics.

For many skiers, the choice is straightforward: if two comparable helmets fit equally well and one includes MIPS, it is a sensible feature to choose. The trade-off can be a slightly higher price, although there are strong MIPS options at several price points. On the hill, the difference in bulk or feel is generally minimal.

Start with fit, not helmet size

A helmet can have excellent impact technology and still offer poor protection if it moves around. Sizes vary between brands, so do not rely only on the size of your old helmet, cap or beanie. Measure the circumference of your head roughly one centimetre above your eyebrows, then compare it with the manufacturer’s size chart.

Try the helmet on with the fit system fully loosened. It should sit level, covering your forehead without dropping towards your eyes. Tighten the rear adjustment dial until it feels secure and even around your head. It should feel snug, not painful.

Use this quick test before committing:

  • Shake your head gently from side to side and up and down. Your scalp should move with the helmet, with no obvious wobble.
  • Check for pressure points after wearing it for several minutes. A hot spot in the shop can become distracting halfway through a long ski day.
  • Fasten the chin strap. It should sit comfortably under your jaw with enough room for one or two fingers, not hang loose beneath your chin.
  • Try on your goggles with the helmet. There should be no large gap at the forehead and no pressure pushing the goggles down on your nose.
Do not size up simply to make room for a thick hat. Most ski helmets have warm liners and ear pads already, while a bulky beanie can compromise fit. On especially cold days, a thin helmet-compatible liner or balaclava is the better option.

Fit systems and shapes matter

A rear dial makes it easier to fine-tune fit, especially if you share a helmet between a thinner liner in spring and a balaclava in January. Some models also offer adjustable height at the back, which helps accommodate different head shapes and keeps the goggle strap sitting neatly.

Head shape matters too. One brand may feel better for a rounder head, while another works for a longer or narrower profile. If a helmet creates a firm pressure point at the temples or forehead, move on. Do not assume it will mould to your head after a few days on snow.

Match the helmet to the skiing you do

Your regular terrain should influence the features you prioritise. A lightweight in-mould ski helmet is a popular all-mountain choice. It keeps weight low and provides a clean, low-profile shape for piste laps, ski school sessions and trips where you will wear it all day.

Hard-shell construction uses a separate outer shell bonded to an impact-absorbing liner. These helmets can be a good choice for park skiing, frequent use or anyone who prefers a more substantial feel. They are often slightly heavier, but durability and a tougher exterior can be appealing when skis, poles and bags are constantly being loaded in and out of cars or chalet storage.

For touring and boot-packing, low weight and strong ventilation become more valuable. Look for a helmet intended for that use, with the correct certification for the activities you plan to do. A resort helmet is not automatically suitable for mountaineering, climbing or every backcountry objective.

Families should prioritise easy adjustment and a genuinely comfortable fit over advanced extras. Children are far more likely to keep a helmet on when it does not pinch, overheat or interfere with their goggles. Adults should lead by example: helmet use is normal across the mountain, from nursery slopes to steep off-piste terrain.

Safety standards are non-negotiable

For skiing and snowboarding in Great Britain and European resorts, look for a helmet certified to EN 1077. This standard covers helmets designed for alpine skiing and snowboarding. You may also see ASTM certification on helmets sold for the North American market. Check the label inside the helmet rather than relying on a product photo or an assumption based on brand.

MIPS is separate from certification. It is an added technology, not a substitute for an approved ski helmet. Likewise, a helmet marketed for cycling, skating or climbing may not meet the standard intended for snowsports. Use the right equipment for the sport.

Replace a helmet after a significant impact, even if the shell looks mostly fine. The energy-absorbing liner can be damaged without visible cracking. Also replace helmets with split shells, damaged straps, loose padding or a broken fit dial. If you do not know a helmet’s history because it was borrowed or bought second-hand, a new helmet is the safer call.

Ventilation, warmth and the weather forecast

Skiing weather can shift from biting wind on the chairlift to bright, warm spring snow by lunch. Adjustable vents let you tune airflow without removing your helmet. Close them for a cold, windy summit and open them during high-output skiing, hiking or softer afternoon conditions.

More vents are not always better. If you mainly ski in midwinter or feel the cold easily, a well-insulated helmet with controllable ventilation may be more useful than an ultra-vented race-inspired design. If you run warm or ski in sunny spring conditions, airflow can make a major difference to comfort and goggle fogging.

Removable ear pads and liners are useful for washing away sweat after a trip. They can also make a helmet more versatile across seasons, though you should only remove components if the manufacturer confirms the helmet is designed to be used that way.

Get helmet and goggles working together

Goggle compatibility is easy to underestimate until you spend a day dealing with a cold strip of exposed forehead, pressure on the bridge of your nose or a goggle strap that keeps slipping. Take your usual goggles when trying helmets whenever possible.

The helmet brim should meet the top of the goggle frame cleanly. A small gap is not always a problem, but a large one can let in cold air and looks awkward. Check that the helmet’s rear goggle clip holds the strap securely and that the frame does not distort when the helmet is adjusted to your proper fit.

If you are buying both at once, choosing helmet and goggles from the same specialist brand can improve the odds of a clean fit, but it is not a guarantee. Different frame sizes, face shapes and helmet sizes still matter. Try the combination rather than buying on styling alone.

Features worth paying for - and ones to question

Beyond MIPS, consider whether the helmet has the features you will actually use. A removable liner, adjustable venting, a secure goggle retainer and a good fit system tend to improve day-to-day ownership. Audio-compatible ear pads can be convenient, but keep volume low enough to hear lift announcements, other skiers and changing conditions around you.

A premium finish, magnetic buckle or integrated visor may be appealing, especially for regular resort travel. Integrated visors can work well for skiers who wear glasses, but they are a personal preference and should be tested carefully for coverage and fit. Do not pay for a feature that makes the helmet heavier or less comfortable for your own skiing.

Colour is practical as well as personal. Bright colours can make it easier for friends and family to spot each other in busy lift areas or flat light. A neutral helmet is versatile, while a bold one brings personality to your kit. Either choice works if the fit is right.

A good helmet should disappear once you start skiing: secure on a fast descent, warm on the lift and compatible with the goggles you trust. Choose the model that earns that feeling, then make it part of every mountain day.
