Waterproofing is the headline feature, but it is only one part of a capable snowboarding jacket. Numbers are useful, but they are not the whole story. A jacket with a high waterproof rating can still let you down if its seams are not properly sealed or its zips allow water through. Fully taped seams give the strongest all-round protection because every seam is covered. Critically taped seams protect the most exposed areas, usually the shoulders, hood and upper body, and can be enough for drier resort days.

There is no single right answer: choose a shell for adaptable layering, or insulation for simpler cold-weather comfort.

Park and freestyle riders may favour a relaxed fit, durable outer fabric and reliable vents. Repeated movement, falls and time spent standing around features can expose weak construction quickly. A shell often makes sense here, because it can be layered differently as the season changes.

For powder trips and frequent storm riding, look for higher waterproof protection, fully taped seams, a dependable powder skirt and longer coverage. Deep snow is brilliant until it gets inside your jacket. Build your system for the moments when the weather is at its worst, not only for the sunny product photos.

Do Not Forget Breathability and Layers

Breathability describes how well moisture vapour from your body can escape. If you work hard while riding and perspiration stays trapped inside, you can end up feeling damp even when rain and snow are kept outside. Breathability ratings are often listed in g/m²/24h, with higher figures generally better for high-output use.

However, your base layers matter just as much. Avoid cotton next to the skin because it holds moisture and dries slowly. Choose a moisture-managing synthetic or merino base layer, then add a fleece, technical mid-layer or lightweight insulated layer as needed. This setup keeps warmth adjustable and helps your jacket's breathability do its job.

Remember that no breathable fabric can fully compensate for overheating in a heavy layer system. Use pit zips, loosen your collar briefly when sheltered and adapt your layers to the forecast. Comfort comes from managing heat before sweat builds up.

Care That Keeps Waterproofing Performing

Snowboard jackets need occasional care, especially after wet holidays, indoor sessions or a season of chairlift grime. Follow the care label, close all zips and fastenings before washing, and use a cleaner made for technical outerwear where recommended. Standard detergents and fabric softeners can leave residues that reduce fabric performance.

If water stops beading on the surface, restore the water-repellent treatment with a suitable wash-in or spray-on product. Dry the jacket as directed on its care label, as gentle heat is sometimes needed to reactivate the finish. Store it clean and dry rather than compressed at the bottom of a kit bag.
